Here is what we've been working on in Kindergarten
English Language Arts (ELA)
In Language Arts, we work on several skills throughout the year. These skills include: reading and spelling sight words, identifying letter sounds, blending and building words that contain those sounds, and identifying the elements of a story. Below are the skills we have learned and the skills we are currently trying to master.
Sight Words: I, am, a, the, little, to, have, is, we, like, he, my, for, me, she, he, we, with, SEE, AND, Letter of the week: Rr Previously learned letters: M, T, A, S, P, C, I, N, B Story elements: Author's Purpose (entertain, inform, persuade), |

We read the story A Bad Case of Stripes and discussed poor Camilla Cream's problem. We also learned that problem and solution fit together like a puzzle.

Math
|
Currently we are learning about measurement. We have learned how to measure:
We've used non-standard units (cubes, yarn, crayons, etc.) to measure measure and compare different objects. |
These students are using a balance scale to compare the weight the different objects.
ScienceWe are exploring matter in our current science unit. We have learned how to describe the 3 states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. We can give you an example of each state and tell you how it changes. We are currently having a blast conducting experiments to learn about sink and float!
As a follow up, we learned how boats float and we created our own boats out of aluminum foil. Our objective: the boat had to float AND hold the bear. If not, we problem solved to make our boat better. |
Predicting, and exploring which items will sink or float. Students created their own boats with foil and bears!

Cherry Crest Farm
We had a blast on the field trip to Cherry Crest Farm! We started out with a wagon ride to the pumpkin patch where we got to pick our own pumpkin! Next, we learned how pumpkins grow and we were able to explore at different pumpkin science stations. We weighed our pumpkin using a hand scale, we measured the circumference of our pumpkin, and we were able to see the inside of a pumpkin using a magnifying glass!
After the stations, we took the wagon back to the main area and we learned all about honey bees and we got see an actual working bee hive! We also learned that bees only buzz around us because they are looking for sweet nectar. Once they realize we are not flowers, they will fly away on their own! We also learned about cream and all the food made from cream. We even tmade butter -- it was delicious! Finally, after petting all the animals, having a picnic lunch, and playing on all the rides, we came back to school. And yes, we slept on the bus while Mrs. Sherman took pictures of us :) |
